I was stationed at Sa-Dec Province November 1969 to May of 1971. I was on MilPHAP Team 16 as a "general medic." (AFSC 90270) I enjoyed teaching English to Vietnamese teenagers off duty. I often wandered the back alleys and paths with an entourage of twenty or more youngsters. I was a pied piper of sorts. I met the Buddhist monks and was allowed in their beautiful temples. We occasionally went to Duoc Thon Province by chopper or on a navy boat of some sort ... a far more dangerous place. We took care of villagers including the families of Vietcong militia. We didn't ask questions. There was no way to tell anyway.
My off duty activities probably put myself and my young friends at risk, thinking back on it, but I feel I was an ambassador of good will in a terrible war. I think I left Vietnam a better place.
I'd like to hear from friends in the MILPHAP program, especially Team 16.
