Served with 'D' Co. 1st BN 4th Marines . Was a grunt 0331 machine gunner I walked, Ran, crawled through the muck, stagnant rice paddies, wait-a-minute vines with many good men, friends we laughed, prayed and even cried together. Some which made it home only to die horrible deaths from cancer and other diseases related to their magnanimous efforts during their service for this country. Little did any of us think that we would return home to a society so full of hatred for their own service men that uniforms could not be displayed. Yes, I remember those young men when we sat and spoke of patriotism as we ate 'C' Rations that were stamped with the code identifiers from the Korean conflict. Those young men who were proud to be US Marines and proud to serve their country no matter the cost to them personaly. Even when the young men lay on stretchers with bullet wounds and missing limbs they smiled and felt the wave of pride. Yet, when they returned home they were scum, baby killers, mongruls, regarded with disdain. The society produced anit-war sentiment to the point of allowing societal traitors to, not only the the service personnel in Vietnam, but also to the country, Terrorized, belittled, and subjected to this anti-war episodes of the 60's and now many say let go forget it, it's over. FORGET HELL! We must keep that memory alive so we will not repeat the past. We have Politicians that right now would do and are doing the same thing to day to our glorious service men and women who are there in Iraq. Let's not ALLOW this to happen.
